"How Many Hens Per Rooster? Mating Ratios for Fertile Eggs"

One of the most common reasons a clutch comes out full of clear eggs is a simple one: the cock-to-hen ratio was off. Pack too many hens behind one rooster and he cannot keep them all fertile; run two cocks together and they may spend more energy fighting than breeding. Here is how to get it right.

The ratios that work

The ideal number of hens per cock depends mostly on breed size. Lighter, more agile birds cover more hens; heavy breeds cover fewer. A good starting point:

Bantam 18 25
Light / laying breeds 12 20
Heavy / dual-purpose & meat 8 12

A cock in peak condition can push toward the maximum; an older cock or an immature cockerel can manage only about half as many hens as a vigorous yearling.

Why too few hens is also a problem

It seems like fewer hens per cock should mean better fertility, but it does not always work that way. With only one cock and more than half a dozen hens, he tends to play favorites, breeding a few hens constantly and ignoring the rest. And two cocks housed together often fight so much that fertility crashes for the whole pen. Oddly, three or more cocks usually fight less than two, because no single rivalry dominates.
